“If you stay with me….you will no longer be a mortal man.  I will make you immortal.  You will not die or grow old.” (Evslin 119)

Calypso’s offer is very interesting to Ulysses.  Imagine…never getting older, never getting sick or hurt, never dying.  But also…watching loved ones age, suffer and die.

Would you want to be immortal?

What are the advantages, disadvantages and just interesting things about being immortal?

Explain.

  1. I would say no. Why should just one person have the chance to not die and age and the others don't. We have enough time to do a lot of things. So make the most of it and do the things you love (and homework). The advantages of being immortal is that you can never die which is pretty cool though. The disadvantages about being immortal is that you might not be liked just as much as other people. You could be nice it's just that people might get jealous. You also can't feel pain. If someone says I just lost my mother, you won't know what it is like. An interesting thing about being immortal is that you won't feel pain. Let say a car hits you super hard. You won't feel anything.

    1. Good blog Davray! I was just wondering, are you sure that you can't feel pain if you are immortal?

    2. Great Blog, I do think though that immortals can feel pain physically, just not mentally.

    3. Well, do you know Spock from Star Trek. When he lost his mother, he didn't feel any pain.

    4. You might be right, but the thing I said before is true.

  2. I would NOT want to be immortal. Watching all the people I love die wouldn't make me want to live. I want to grow old with my family and friends. I wouldn't want to be immortal because if I was I would think that I have all the time in the world but if I wasn't immortal I would be like YOLO and go like skydiving the next day. I would actually live life.

  3. I don't want to be immortal, yes you could live forever and see all sorts of new inventions, but what happens if the world ends? or a black hole appears? you never know. I would see everyone die and i will be all alone. Yes of course I am scared of dying, but I rather be up in heaven with my family then to me immortal. I will have to go through so much trouble, because people will notice that I am not aging and start telling other people. I rather be myself! I want to live a normal life.

  4. I think I stand with every one else by saying I would absolutely not want to be immortal. So, I guess some advantages are that you can never grow old and always be young and hip (and in Ulysses's situation, "do the do" all the time) But the disadvantages are tip the scale by a whole lot! You would watch all your friends by and family and there family to come and so on and so forth. Also, eventually the earth will have another big bang or something and you will be floating in space forever! (Imagine the word forever faintly echoing in the back round) And that is totally not fun. Wouldn't you rather have a good life and die in piece knowing you did what you wanted to do and let that be it? Why suffer and life for ever?!

  6. I think being immortal comes with very good advantages like never dying or never aging. But it also comes with a lot of disadvantages.Like seeing our loved ones die and people around you getting sick. In Ulysses shoes it would be a really hard decision I think. To choose to be immortal or to be human is not a frequently asked question but also it is not a easy question to respond to. It is practically choosing your future. I would respond to this question with a no. Just because I would never want to see everyone dying that I met and I never aging or will never die. Also I would think it would get boring being alive for ever. What can you possibly do?

  7. No I do not want to be immortal. First it's not fair to everyone else who does not have immortality and second, it can get really boring. One day, you will be sitting on a rock thinking, "I have done everything in the world, what on earth can I do now?!". Eventually an immortal would get so bored, they would think of killing themselves, or maybe even attempting it. That is why immortality sucks.

  8. I would say no to immortality because I want to live every second of my existence to the fullest. Being mortal means you will eventually die, which makes every second of life more precious. Knowing that you will eventually die makes everything more special and more memorable. I want to be able to grow with my loved ones and experience memories with that person. The bad parts about immortality is that you can never die because I know I wouldn't want to be around forever although that would be cool, it's because I need to let go and move on to new places eventually. Another negative factor is you will watch your loved ones pass away and get sick, which would be torturous and very sad knowing that you will be alone with no one to turn to. A positive side is also not dying if you are that type of person. I can imagine that never dying can be pretty cool as well, so you can be more adventurous and try new things you wouldn't usually try if you were mortal. And also if you do something wrong like going to jail you never die so you can fix the mistakes. Although it would be awesome to be immortal I think I like the way I am and that I would like to stay mortal.

  9. Of all the things to be in the world, being immortal is something that I would definitely NOT want to be! I mean, it would be pretty interesting to be able to live for forever and to witness all of earth's greatest and worst moments. Just think...getting hurt really badly, but never dying. What if you were young and got hurt badly? Nothing would happen! Maybe a little bit of pain, but nothing would happen to you. Now, at this point you're probably thinking “Well if there’s so many good things about being immortal, then why do you want to be mortal?”. Well, just think, everything would get boring and you wouldn’t have the excitement of living your life and taking risks. Your life would just consist of you waiting for 10-100-1,000 etc. for something new to happen, and you saying “Been there, done that!” about 10,000,000 times! (LITERALLY.) It’s not just living life that would get boring, it's the sadness that would be the worse. Obviously, you would have friends, unlike Mr Katz, but let's say that not all of your friends are immortal! You would have to live with grief for the longest time, and that is something I do NOT want!

  10. I think I would want to be immortal because I have thanatothobia, the phobia of death. The advantages of this are quite obvious, you never die! Being someone like me, I would be fine with this. However I would watch my loved ones slowly age. I would never be able to see them once they sadly pass. The interesting thing would be how I would be able to see how the human race has evolved. Also the world ending and me moving on to another planet.

  11. The sound of being immortal sounds pretty amazing and if I would probably accept the offer and then regret it after about a month. Just think about it, although having super human abilities sound awesome...if you where stuck at one age and you never had any idea of how much time passed, you'd never be able to discover all of the amazing things that happen when you grow old. You wouldn't be able to gain responsibilities and do stuff that you have been looking forward to do since you where so small. Also having to witness everyone one around you age and eventually die in what would seem to be a second to an immortal is completely terrifying. Also every 80 years or so you would completely start over and have all new friends around you, which is pretty scary. I would much rather see someone die as a mortal and know that one day I would see them again in heaven (since I believe in Jesus)

  13. I would never take a chance at being immortal. I couldn't bare being bored, going through high school over again for 100 years or more. An amazing thing about being immortal would be to always travel and see life evolving in front of your eyes. This is a huge advantage as a scientist. Being immortal means that older you get, the wiser you get. Over all, I would not become immortal mostly because I cannot bear seeing my friends and family in pain or worse dying.

  14. Immortality sounds freaking awesome!!!!! But I pass all my friends and family will turn super old and wrinkly without me. I would feel left out. No but in all seriousness the joys of life is taking risks. I have the fear of dying on roller coasters but that's what makes them fun!!!!!!

  15. I would never chose to be immortal. It would be way too sad watching all my loved ones suffer and die in front of my very eyes. Plus, it would be so boring!! I mean if you never get sick then that is awesome. It would of been so useful being immortal a few minutes ago because you never get sick and I puked. If you never get hurt, then that is a big thumbs up because, well, everyone gets hurt once in a while. Imagine hitting your funny bone and not feeling a thing. And even stubbing your toe! The wonders of not feeling everyday pains. But a huge thumbs up is to not worry about dying in the future.

  16. Would I want to be immortal? Yes and No. Think of the benefits, you can literally do anything. Jump from building to building, climb the Eiffel tower, be a spy. But then think of the disadvantages. You always have to remake new friends because your old friends just died, you have to watch your family die, when you know you can do nothing about it. So I think if I had to choose, I would not like to be immortal.

  17. I wouldn't want to be immortal because I would see my friends die around me. My family, and everybody I know and love. Then again, it is tempting to be immortal because I would never have a midlife crises or any worries about death. But it would be too painful for me to live through a life where II see my children and my children's children die before my eyes. Therefore in conclusion I don't want to be immortal.

  18. I would like to be immortal but it would totally suck because I'll do everything and then have nothing left to do and I'll be bored. Achilles even said in the movie Troy:"The gods envy us because every moment cold be our last and that what makes it so fun to be mortal." So ya. I would not like to be forever immortal because it would suck; IT WOULD SUCK A WHOLE FREAKING LOT!!!

  19. Although immortality is pretty cool. I would prefer to be mortal with the rest of my friends and family. Why, you may ask. Because usually people will imagine being immortal as a pirivilage, you cant die, you are alive, and you do not have to fear death! But if you really think about it. Immorality is not a privilage, it is eventually tiring. Soon you will feel alone with everyone dying. You will feel trapped like you have no way out and want to feel what it is like after you die. That is why I think Calypso is so desperate, because she has no one to actually spend time with and she wants someone to keep her company.

  20. I would hate to be immortal because you are breaking the chain of life. You are on earth to live and then die. I think for me the most part why I would hate to be immortal is because like you said in the question you would see everybody live and then die. After just seeing so many people die it would get quite sad. The only good thing for me if I had to be immortal would have to be that I would feel special. I would feel special because I'm not god but yet I'm still immortal.

  21. This is a hard decision, but I would have to say I would not want to be immortal. I think about death, and I do get scared, but really, I would rather live one long full life without extensions, then be trapped in a life where you never die. There would be no new adventures to go on, nothing new to discover and no family or friends to support you through your long hard life. I would probably be very lonely (like Mr Katz, but worse) and sad. I would never be happy.

  22. I think being mortal is't something good but is also something good. Being Immortal means you see all your loved ones die and live a sad life. When you can also explore the whole world because you can't die get ill and most of all can survive almost a year without eating food. So I would say not be immortal because even if you die you can still live and see your loved ones in heaven.

  23. At the start it might seem amazing, magical and privileging, but what about when the people you know will die of old age. Or what about when you see your daughter on their death bed. It will be depressing and bring many things that will be hard to deal with.

I would rather just go my age and pass away with my friends and family.
