I hope that 2017 will be a great year for everyone.
Unfortunately, the start of 2017 did not start off well for one individual:
In Chicago, an 18-year old boy with an evident mental illness, was bullied, harassed, kidnapped, and tortured by four teenagers. They used FACEBOOK, a popular social media site, to stream what they were doing.
How should social media be used APPROPRIATELY?
Should penalties be enforced for people who do not use social media sites properly?
If you were a judge, how would you punish these four teenagers?
Explain.
I think that social media should be used appropriately because you could talk to someone without really knowing anything about them or maybe not even the real truth about them and also not knowing there faces. You have to know if you are making a good decision when they tell you to meet them here. It's like are you really setting a good example to everyone that when someone tells you to meet them here you will act like a dog and listen to them? You have to be mature and responsible to know what you are getting yourself into. I think that there should be a big punishment to these people and to put them in Jail. To also teach a lesson to the person to never meet someone that you don't know anything about. That person is setting an example to everyone in this world. If you use social media not properly then you should have someone talk to you about it and ask questions as in why they are doing this, are they making a good decision?,that might affect there lives. People in America don't think and they don't know what they are getting themselves into. For example: "THE FLORIDA SHOOTING"
ReplyDeleteAwesome blog Celena! I totally agree with what you are saying about setting bad examples!
DeleteI think you are totally right people don't seem to realise when they are being mean to an actual person. Great blog.
DeleteGreat pint Celina!
DeleteThis is a great blog! People don't know what there getting themselves into, everyone needs to wake up and face reality that ur not always safe on social media and posting sexualy inappropriate pictures in only going to lour the bad people in.
DeleteI personally sometimes think that social media shouldn't even exist. People do such stupid stuff on social media platforms because they think that because there is a screen they are protected. It's like when those teenagers were sending each other nudes on Snapchat when it first came out. Penalties should definitely be enforced on those who do not use these sites properly should get their privileges taken away from them and they should get taught about using the internet wisely. If I were to punish those teenagers I would make them learn about the mentally ill and make them know what it's like to be mentally ill or as people who don't know what it is call it being retarded. I would assume that it isn't fun to be mentally ill. I definitely know that it's not fun getting picked on. Those teenagers need to go to jail.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that kids should be taught on how to use internet wisely. I also think you should change your username
DeleteWell, this was quite a sad start to the new year. A kid was tortured. Not only that, but it was streamed on Facebook! This is very bad and good for different reasons. Bad because thousands of people watched this kid get beat up and good because it notified people about it and people would probably not have found out until much longer. if I was the judge of this case, oh boy would I have a treat for them! I would have the things done to the boy done back to them. an eye for and eye. Plus, many years in prison for being very naughty.
ReplyDeleteGood points Logan! Great blog
Deleteyour absolutely right logan thousands of people are watching and it's completely wrong for this to be happening and your right an eye for an eye
DeleteIt was very a very sad start to the year and I hope things get better. Nice blog though!
DeleteI personally think inappropriate use of social media is such a big issue. So many people have gotten cyber bullied because of social media being used inappropriately and many people have committed suicide or hurt themselves because of this. This is wrong and it is bullying, no one deserves to be treated like the 18-year-old in Chicago was treated. Penalties should definitely be enforced for people who do not use social media sites appropriately because they hurt others and it is bullying. If I was a judge I would punish these people by putting them in jail for a period of time. The amount of time would depend on what they did. What people are using social media for today is wrong and is changing people’s lives, and not in a good way.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree, there shoulb be major penalties, to what those people have done and honestly your right on what people should be doing with tey'rew social media and not what they're doing now
DeleteI agree and it's really sad to think that social media sites are starting to become free bullying apps.
DeleteI also agree about how on social media sites, you can easily cyberbully. Great blog!
DeleteI think personally, and I'm sure most people think this too is that, people that post innapropriate things should be banned from all social medias and there should be a place to go if u find something bad because personally ive seen some bad things before and let me tell you they aren't pretty.. but in this point those teenagers should be given the same punishement that they gave to the boy, you know what they say an eye for an eye and an ear for an ear. But anyways they should be ashamed in themselves and sent to juvi these things are just horrible, what is wrong with our society now a days it's horrible
ReplyDeleteGreat blog I really like your saying an eye for an eye an ear for an ear I totally agree with you
DeleteI think that social media should be used appropriately because if you don't then you could make a fool out of yourself forever and it's not like it will go away. Whenever you post something, it always stays there. Even if you think you deleted it, it is still somewhere where other people can see it. About the incident in Chicago, I think they should get extremely punished. If I had to chose how to punish them, I would say jail for a very long period of time. And, the kids should be banned from all social medias and well... I can't think of anything that anyone else hasen't said yet but, they should really get a good spanking.
ReplyDeleteIf I would decide on these four teenagers punishment. It would be 1,000 hours of community service, and 3 years prison. Why? You may ask, because these teen angers KIDNAPPED and assaulted a mentally challenged kid because of their hate for Donald trump. Their for they well deserve 3 years prison and 1000 hours of comutiny service to give them something to do instead of kidnapping white teenagers.
ReplyDeleteWhat they did was awful but i did not know they did it because of there hate for donald trump.
DeleteThese people are just stupid. I think your right that they did for there hate for Donald Trump, but also for there hate on white people.
DeleteSocial media can be a very fun and entertaining place. You can do so many different things that can create either good feedback or bad feedback. Unfortunately, in Chicago, not too long ago, an 18yo boy was harassed and his torture was streamed on facebook. The four teenagers who did this should definitely receive a punishment for doing this and if I were a judge, I would put them in prison according to what they did to the boy. When sites like facebook, instagram, snapchat etc. were created, they were meant to bring joy to people, and when its starts being used as site where you can easily bully someone because of the way their hair looks or because of a shirt that isn’t in style, it can be very depressing. If you’re going to use social media use it carefully, and don’t just spit out insults at something that isn’t perfect to you, everyone has flaws. If you are going to use instagram or facebook etc., then the least you could do is be caring and positive, because there is already a lot of negativity on these sites, and if you ad to the negativity it’s just going to get worse. So please, if you’re going to say something mean, at least think of what you’re doing because everybody treats words like puddles, when they’re actually tsunamis.
ReplyDeletepreach alexandra!! i 100% agree with ever word you wrote
DeleteSocial media should definitely be used much more appropriately. It is so cruel what these teens did to a poor mentally-challenged person. Its even more DISGUSTING how they live streamed the whole entire thing for people to see. Did they think that what they were doing was cool? Funny? It was horrible and mean. They should be punished for what they did. If I was a judge, I would humiliate the teens the same way they humiliated the mentally challenged boy. I would make all the teen go on live tv to apologize for what they did. Let the whole world know what they did. And for the abuse, they should all be sentenced to do a couple of months in juvenile detention. But no matter what punishment the teens get, no boy can forget the pain and humiliation of what happened that day.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should use technologie appropriately and do no harm to others.
Great blog! I totally agree they should DEFFINETLY apologies for what they did and I sure hope that they ALL apogiesed to that poor boy, just because ur white, challenged and may look different from other people does not deserve such humiliation.
DeleteYou're right Matthew it's absolutely disgusting
DeleteI think social media should not be used the way the teenagers who tortured that kid in Chicago used it. That was awful and unacceptable. Who kidnaps someone who can't defend themselves, tortures them and posts it for the world to see. Did they think they'd get away with it? Who kidnappe's someone and posts it. Social media should be used to chat with your friends, share stuff and have fun. These people are just jerks. I would send them to prison for a couple of years, teach them what it's like to be picked on. Once they are out of prison, they probably won't hurt anyone else. Not for a while anyway.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, they were horrible people. Think about how not only the victim feels, but the victim's parents!
DeleteWell I think this is a very important subject that needs to be discussed with children our age. Social media is definitely an active part in our lives and I do think that appropriate usage is necessary. Such as, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. Social media should be used to contact friends, see whats happening in the rest of the world. Not for threats, torment and joy through hurting others. Whether it is emotionally or physically, no one should use social media as a source of bullying. Penalties should be enforced when this thing happens. In schools an equal penalty would to either suspend the student(s) or even expel them. I don't think they should be arrested if it comes to a level of this case. They shouldn't go to the death penalty but they definitely shouldn't be let free. I would punish them by first of all, arresting them since it does break the law and second of all, I would eliminate their access to a) social media accounts and b) cellular devices. They was a totally uncalled for situation and they absolutely should punished.
ReplyDeleteWell spoken! I agree with your penalties. I should have thought of the school thing when I wrote my blog.
DeleteJordan well said
DeleteI think that social media is no longer used appropriately especially when everyone was obsessed with Donald trump even I didn't act like a proper digital citizen abd I'm not ashamed to say it I definitely think that those teens should be punished severely I can't imagine the thought of being kidnapped and beaten on top of that they recorded what they were doing as if it was a joke this was a very serious matter and I believe that now a days people don't think before they react these four kids should feel ashamed. If I were them I would be scared because what goes around comes around.
ReplyDeleteI agree that social media is almost no longer used appropriately. Great blog Kylie!
DeleteBecause they were only kids I wouldn't sentence them to jail however what they did was very wrong and how they use social media was not nice and very wrong. Therefore I would have banned them from all social media with no exceptions. Young girls and boys but mostly girls for this case are surfing the web looking at celebrities or famous people and trying to copie them by posting inappropriate pictures of dressing inappropriately. Our generation and advertisements has led many young girls into believing that if they don't look a certain way then there not perfect which is not true. There are also young people who think "sexting" is ok, well it's not, unfortunetly some girls and boys are sending nudes to a boyfriend or girlfriend or are being purepresered by a boy friend or someone else into doing those types of things. These are all examples of mis use of social media or texting and I think that everyone needs to wake up and face reality especially young people, they need to know that these types of situations and more can lead to a criminal record and in big trouble. And the girls out there who don't like the way your body is or how they look need to realise that what you have is perfect there is no right way, we all come in all shapes and sizes and we need to except that it is what it is.
ReplyDeletethat's so true sarah i like how you are very passionate!!
DeleteI think social media should be used for expressing yourself to your friends, communicating to people, sharing things you love with others, and more. What should not be done is posting videos involving such horrid imagery. Technically, those teens didn't do anything wrong in social media perspective, because they were just sharing something. But to actual people…you know. I think that people that post things that don't follow regulations but that are still appropriate should be maybe banned for a week on that social media. But if it's like what those teenagers did, they should be arrested. If I were the judge, I would definitely put them in jail for a long time. Maybe a good 5 years, because some would say that torture is even worse than death. And once they get out of jail, I would make sure these kids have proper therapy or something for what they did.
ReplyDeleteSocial media should be used to connect with friends you already know. You should post things you like. Maybe your new hockey stick or your dog. You should not post things that may offend or hurt others, inappropriate photos and really...if you won't show your grandma the photo, don't show the internet the photo. If the photo is not suitable to be on the internet, the user or possibly hacker should very well be found and punished. A bad post can lead to almost 180 years behind bars. A young blogger experienced this after a bad post straight to social media.
ReplyDeleteThese teenagers deserve more than a good few years in jail. They should be charged with harassment and of course, unsuitable social media content. All these teenagers can hope for is less than 5 years in jail. All we can do is pray that this will never happen again.
I think social media should be used as a chat hangout but not to be used as a bad thing like these 4 black people did to this kid that has disabiltys. I think they either all get a death penalty or they get hurt as badly as they treated the kidnapped kid. I think that is a fair consecense because like my history teacher says an eye for an eye but in this case its damage for the damage you did
ReplyDeleteI agree on most of what you said but they shouldn't get a death penalty because what would that do nothing just kill 4 people even if they did bad things. but greaat blog
Deletesocial media was a great idea in the first place but now people are starting to use it in a way that just disgusts me! Sending inappropriate pictures, talking to random people, it just doesn't make sense!! I think we should use social media for its initial purpose to talk to friends and to put pictures that make you happy and express who you are (obviously without being inappropriate) To some people social media is their escape and it makes them feel good about themselves so, i suggest that next time your thinking about ruining someone's self confidence, just be the bigger person and STOP! To start the bullies should definately get their accounts taken away and get a good spanking from their parents ( just kidding...but really) they should go to jail, bullying is such a terrible thing that i wouldn't wish upon anyone and it really needs to stop. I absolutely hate bullies and if you ever see someone being bullied even if you don't know them just to be a friend to them because you have no idea how much one little action can help. Bottom line, people should not be allowed to use social media if they aren't mature enough to handle themselves.
ReplyDeleteWow Chelsea great blog! I think you put a lot of time and effort into it!
Deleteyour blog was great!!!
Deletewe really should just use it how it was supposed to be created.
Before social media was used way differently than now. When social media was created it was meant to be so you can catch up with friends you don't see very often or to express yourself with different pictures. Now social media is used as a way to send inappropriate pictures or even to bully people. But what the 4 teenagers did with that boy was awful but not only that he was innocent but he also had mental illness. But then also to stream it on Facebook! Like really what do people think sometimes. Of course I think they should be punished to a very extreme amount! Like not only to kidnap a kid that has mental illness but to stream it too! Honestly I send them straight to jail in a snap of my fingers. I wouldn't even second guess my self its just disgusting what they did and I hope it never happens again!
ReplyDeleteSocial Media is an amazing concept. Its a way for me to keep in contact with my friends, Express myself, preserve memory's, enjoy my free time and helps me remember peoples birthdays. Unfortunately there are some people that use social media for other reasons... Bad reasons. Its crazy how people think that nothing can happen to them because there typing threw a screen. There should be punishment to bad digital citizens. I think the consequences should be deleting their social media platforms. (Losing their snapchat streaks would definitely teach them a lesson) If your going to use social media wrong don't use it at all. *The microphone drops*
ReplyDelete*picks up the mic* I totally agree.
DeleteSocial media should be a place where you can talk to your friends and watch cute and funny videos (like cats falling)but today now people post inappropriate pictures and videos and they cyberbully. I think people who don't use the internet for what is was meant to be should be punished. They should be like I don't know suspended from the internet for a while. They shouldn't be doing inappropriate things in the first place so they deserve what they would get. Also it's sickening to hear that people are torturing others AND streaming it online. If I were the judge I would put them in jail for life! They deserve to have their life horrible because they did horrible things! I can't believe that people would hurt others to start with but to put it online!!!
ReplyDeleteI purrsonally agree with your statement. What those kids did was clawful. Your blog was Pawsome.
DeleteHahahaha that was Claw-ver
DeleteI think that what those 4 teenagers did to that boy was not right. I'm not just saying that's wrong because he was autistic, but because that should happen to nobody. I think the teens should be punished but not like a life sentence but like few weeks in jail plus get a fine for what they did and they should understand what they did and to who. They should apologize to the boy and his family.
ReplyDeleteThose four teenagers are definitely going to be spending a lot of time in prison. Out of the possession of stolen vehicles, hate crime, robbery, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated battery with deadly weapon and residential burglary they will be spending years. And all this for a presidential candidate.
ReplyDeleteWow America calm down.
like I get the fact that Russia even admitted to cheating the polls but violence doesn't solve anything.
I did not include anything about online because even if they are banned from social media they will easily be able to make a knew one. It is extremely pointless.
